Community Mental Health Scholarships

Griffith University scholarships.

These scholarships were originally funded non-recurrently through CMH and transferred to MHAODB in 12-13. Not all the scholarships were able to be taken up this year so Griffith is now offering the opportunity to apply again for 2014.

Short film highlights healing for depression in urban aboriginal communities

beyondblue in collaboration with The Aboriginal Medical Service of Western Sydney and producers, isee-ilearn, have recently produced a short film, Story for Keeping Strong, to highlight the importance of family, community and services in helping people with depression to regain social and emotional wellbeing. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who live with psychological stress, especially depression and anxiety, may not recognise it or talk to family, friends or a health professional about their symptoms. The film raises awareness of how to talk to someone who might be depressed and assist them to get appropriate help.

Story for Keeping Strong features a conversation about depression between members of an extended family – a young Aboriginal man talks with two Elders, an Aunt and a young Aboriginal woman. View the short film at

Mental Health Whole of Sector Day

This is notice that we are planning to run the Mental Health Whole of Sector day this year on Thursday 10th October 2013, at the Cancer Council Ed Centre.

This is during Mental Health week.

This day is a must for everyone who has an interest in the social and political environment and issues around mental heath.

Our theme is “Change”, and we are hoping to have updates from all the players and discuss issues of importance –

What’s happened in the last year? what is working well? are there any barriers and gaps?

Please put this important event in your diary/calendar now, and we’ll send more information in due course.

For the Mental Health Action Group.
