Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Traineeships Police recruits

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Traineeships

Intakes are conducted in Brisbane and Townsville subject to the level of interest in the program and the number of applications received.

Opportunity to become a Queensland Police Officer

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) offers traineeships in the Justice Entry Program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. These traineeships are part of the Service’s commitment to equal opportunity and diversity in employment, and provide the education qualifications for entry into the QPS as a police recruit, including a First Aid Certificate.

Trainees who successfully undertake this program will also be eligible to receive an Australian National Training Authority endorsed qualification.
Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and ideally have completed a Year 12 school education with at least one or two years employment experience.

Alternatively, applicants who have a Year 10 education with extensive employment and life related skills, who demonstrate potential to succeed as a police officer, may also apply. Applicants must also meet police recruit entry requirements including integrity, health and fitness.
Driver Licence

Applicants must hold a current Australian Open Driver Licence to operate a motor vehicle (manual or automatic)

or

a current Australian Provisional Driver Licence, with one year of driving experience and successful completion of a defensive driving course recognised by the QPS.

The QPS recognises the following defensive driving course: Drive Vehicle in Queensland (TLIC107C)

Defensive driving courses must be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Please click here to see a full list of RTOs that have agreed to list their names as providers of this course.

If you are appointed as a police recruit and your licence is from another state or territory, you will need to obtain a Queensland Open Driver Licence or a Provisional Driver Licence that meets the above requirements before commencing as a recruit. Proof of the currency of your driver licence is required with your application.

To drive police patrol vehicles, police officers must meet particular medical and health standards as outlined in the guidellines of the National Road Transport Commission. These medical standards have been incorporated into the medical and fitness testing associated with Stage 2 of the QPS selection process.
Duration

The traineeship is a six month, full-time course held at the Queensland Police Service academies in Brisbane and Townsville.
Salary

During the traineeship, trainees will receive a salary equal to that of a police recruit. This equates to a fortnightly gross salary of $1279.03*. For existing employees of the QPS, ordinary salary or wages will be maintained for the duration of the traineeship.

Defence Indigenous Development Program Recruitment

The Defence Indigenous Development Program (DIDP) has been developed in order to address the needs of northern Australia’s remote indigenous people. The program provides young indigenous adults with the education, training, life skills and confidence – and as a result the opportunities – to secure and sustain continuous employment of their choice and to be role models within their communities.

DIDP is provided through a partnership between the Department of Defence, Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and the Northern Territory Department of Education and Training (DET).

The DIDP is a residential program which is conducted over seven months out of Charles Darwin University’s Katherine Rural Campus (KRC), 20 kilometres north of Katherine, where trainees spend approximately four weeks training at a time, followed by a one week break at home in their communities. Some periods of dedicated military training with NORFORCE are conducted from Larrakeyah Barracks in Darwin.

For further information please contact the DIDP on 1800 447 827 or email info@didp.com.auDIDP official flyer
