Tuesday 12 April: 20 years on from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody – where to now?
April 15 2011 marks 20 years since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody Report was handed to the Governor General.
To mark this occasion the Australian Human Rights Commission is hosting a public forum:
20 years on from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody- where to now?
Speakers:
* Associate Professor Neil Morgan- Inspector of Custodial Services (Western Australia)
* Ms Vicki Roach- Aboriginal prisoner advocate
* Mr Mick Gooda- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner
* Mr Gerry Moore- CEO, Aboriginal Legal Service- NSW/ACT (Chair)
The forum will look at ways of improving prison conditions through standards and human rights mechanisms like the Optional Protocol on the Convention Against Torture, as well as preventing imprisonment through justice reinvestment and the impact of imprisonment on Indigenous women prisoners.
